Lowering the number of hours is now considered best practice. There's no need for the students to spend an inordinate amount of time getting a few extra credits. A leaner curriculum WILL help graduation rates. The reason they have not yet appeared to rise is that the numbers follow a six-year rate, so many of the changes now implemented (say within the last three years) won't have full impact for a while. We raised the admission standards minimally, but we did not lose half the faculty or staff. That is a candard.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10214951.post-73339913408815088892010-03-01T22:40:13.186-06:002010-03-01T22:40:13.186-06:00The University of Louisiana system is responding t...The University of Louisiana system is responding to the Jindal plan of reform in higher education by lowering the requirements for graduation from 125 hours to 120 hours and the University of Louisiana at Monroe is responding by forcing faculty to eliminate major electives and replace them with college electives to make the majors easier. ULM has already tried everything to improve retention and graduation rates but it remains at 31%. They raised admission standards, invested in retention efforts, eliminated 1/2 the faculty and 1/2 the staff in the last 8 years and have even improved the buildings and nothing has improved the graduation rate. It seems pretty clear that the only thing left to try is to change higher education governance.kantianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01188015577771269496noreply@blogger.com
